REVIEWS

All you could wish for and more

When the sleevenotes of this sumptuous package talk of this 25th anniversary reimagining being assembled by a "curator", it’s wholly appropriate title to be bestowed. While this pinnacle of post-punk synth-pop is far from a museum piece, being as totally contemporary yet completely futuristic today as itt ever was, it’s also an evolving, changing artefact that needs capturing for the moment.

It originally arrived in almost perfect synchronicity with the moment when the media upon which we consumed music exploded in a multitude of possibilities for extended representations. Here that’s reflected firstly on Disc One with the album as previosuly presented on CD being joined by its analogue predecessor since, with the vinyl release only months old, the issuing of A Secret Wish on silver disc was snatched at as the first chance to reconceptualise and expand the initial work.

But it also benefitted from Paul Morley and ZTT’s recognition that there were other ways to broaden the experience of this record, so we get the Do Well Cassette edit of Duel that twists and turns its way through its source material with delicious glee alongside other rethinks and regenerations.

IAN ABRAHAMS, RECORD COLLECTOR

The Scene has been a fan of this seminal ’80s pop masterpiece from the Germans dubbed ’Abba in Hell’ for a quarter of a century now, blissfully unawaren all this time that David Sylvian wrote the bombastic riff for its seminal single, p:Machinery.

This and other fascinating facts grace thehugely passionate curator Ian Peel’s thoroughly enjoyable commentary on this awesome double-CD, which also features Paul Morley and Bob Kraushaar’s 20-minute megamix of Duel/Jewel.

The Scene in THE STAR (Ireland)

The debut album by Germany’s second best musical export, ’A Secret Wish’ has been long overdue a reissue and, 25 years on from its original appearance, this is another fine plundering from the ZTT archives.

"The children of Fritz Lang and Giorgio Moroder" as NME wisely observed at the time, Propaganda, like ABC and Frankie Goes To Hollywood, are a group whose best works were masterminded by Trevor Horn and, like those other two, a group you only need to own one album by. And this is it. It remains a classic of its kind, an album that’s variously brutal and dispassionate, cold and warm, lush but unsubtle, epic but intimate.

The singles ’Dr Mabuse’ and ’Duel’ may only have been minor hits but they’re easily the equal - conceptually, melodically, lyrically, sonically - of ’Two Tribes’ or ’The Look Of Love’. The second CD contains unreleased mixes and twelve-inch versions which, although lacking the invention and charm of the Frankie ones from the same era, are still enjoyable in their own right.

A heady fusion of avant-pop, created by the collision between ZTT’s futurist playfulness and the Düsseldorf quartet’s Teutonic cool, this is a timely reminder of the best the 80s had to offer.

CMU DAILY

"Dusseldorf pop pervs’ debut, engorged for its silver anniversary."

Dubbed "Abba from Hell" by the music press, barbed pop foursome Propaganda fit right into ZTT’s ingenious mix of fruity art conceit and high production values. This 2CD repackage combines the quite different vinyl and CD versions of their 1985 debut and adds a disc of tracks rescued from 12-inchers, cassingles and the unreleased remix vault. Fans will therefore convulse, and new listeners may wonder what they’ve wandered into; the spookiness of Edgar Allan Poe-referencing orchestra trance-out Dream Within A Dream and spine chilling techno opera Dr Mabuse, for example, sit strangely beside the fabulous double-hit of Duel and Jewel (aka the same song in sweet and hydraulic punk versions) but it all works. Though the original line-up never did anything else, this is enough to make you hope that sleevenote hints that the group may be about to reconvene are true.

Ian Harrison, MOJO

Frankie Goes To Hollywood may have had the ZTT label’s sales, but Propaganda had the cool songs and, as we know, the influence. This beautifully pckaged affair features sleevenotes from former Q editor Andrew Harrison, the fully realised versions of A Secret Wish (the p:Polish mix of p:Machinery is a revelation) and a cornucopia of additional treats. Producer Stephen Lipson would never do better work, Claudia Brucken and Susanne Freytag were icily glamorous singers, but crucially they had Michael Mertens, who gave Duel, Dr Mabuse and the rest such melodic flair even before the studio magic. Still stunning.
