Influence is Art of Noise at their very best. Disc One compiles the hit singles, the collaborations, classic album tracks, movie and TV themes, 12" remixes and B-sides. Disc Two retells the Art of Noise story via 20 previously unreleased tracks from all eras of the group ’s history, from 1983 to the present day. ’...because the heart has reasons that reason will never know.

REVIEWS

Not sure how much Art of Noise I personally require but I have to applaud the combination of love and polish that went into this reissue of all their high spots, including the version of Peter Gunn they did with Duane Eddy, the Tom Jones version of Kiss and the theme from The Krypton Factor. The second disc is made up of previously unreleased material. The whole thing’s beautifully put together. Some things are just pleasing to hold in your hand, and this is one.

THE WORD

Whilst previous Art Of Noise compilations have tended to be based on either their ZTT or post-ZTT output; this lovingly-curated selection spans their entire career, from the groundbreaking early work, via the collaborative hits with Duane Eddy and Tom Jones, through to 1999’s under-rated John Hurt-narrated comeback album ’The Seduction of Claude Debussy’. Compiling the "hits, singles, moments, treasures" on two CDs gives both the casual fan and the completist plenty to enjoy, with the lush sleevenotes being a particularly good example of the genre.

Although the celebrated triptych of ’Moments In Love’, ’Beatbox’ and ’Close (To The Edit)’ still sound as innovative, quirky and compelling as they did 25 years ago, in truth, the likes of ’Peter Gunn’ with Eddy and their cover of Prince’s ’Kiss’ with Jones sit slightly uneasy with the rest of the fearlessly inventive output that either precedes or follows it.

As for the second CD, comprised of wholly unreleased material, it’s inevitably a mixed bag of interesting curios and unfinished diversions, but the likes of ’Cassandra’ and ’Beep Beep’ hold up well.

From the sublime to the ridiculous, this is a veritable treasure trove of enigma-wrapped riddles and deranged fun.

CMU DAILY

If ever there was an aptly named album, then this compilation album from the pioneering electronic outfit is it.

Influence charts the career of the second most sampled act in history (after James Brown) and it is lovingly packaged in a deluxe twin-disc set with informative sleevenotes that are as entertaining as the music.

Art of Noise had four incarnations, all blessed by the presence of composer Anne Dudley. She was joined along the way by  JJ Jeczalik and Gary Langan, producer Trevor Horn and music encyclopaedia/journalist Paul Morley.

All fiveplayed a role in the most influential era that produced the astonishing Who’s Afraid Of Art of Noise debut album, a nine-track masterpiece that is arguably the most important elecetronic pop record ever.

The other key albums were The Seduction Of Claude Debussy and In No Sense, Nonsense! - both of which are well represented on this 39-track affair.

5 STARS

The Star (Ireland)

One of the most unusual, innovative and experimental bands to emerge in the Eighties, Art Of Noise included in its ranks Trevor Horn, Anne Dudley and Paul Morley and transcended genre and categorisation with their leftfield sound collages.

Influence is a perfect compilation of their work, with the first of two discs here anthologising their singles, collaborations, film music, TV themes, 12-inch mixes and B-sides. The second disc, quirkily titled The AA Side, gathers previously unreleased gems from their archive. A 36-page booklet includes all the background information even the most fervent fan could wish for.

MUSIC WEEK

’Influence’ gathers up an amalgam of the familiar AoN canon (and handful of ’Moments In Love’ versions, the under-rated and excellent ’Legs’, the influential and highly-sampled ’Beatbox’ and twangarang-anthem ’Peter Gunn’) plus a clutch of b-sides and demos and a pile of unreleased excerpts, best described as ’works in progress’. If you are a total ZTT nut, you may be inspired to unbuckle your trouser-belt and unleash your carnal desires - if not, you might still be ’influenced’ enough to pick this lavish double-CD up. I suggest that you should.

Replete with detailed 32-page booklet (mainly curated by aficionado Ian Peel) and excellent packaging, you’d have to be a slab-wit not to appreciate the work that has gone into this collection, much of which has never seen the light of day, a few of which haven’t been on CD before - the 12" refixed Paranoid MIx of ’Paranoimia’ being one of them.

But it is disc 2 that is of most interest, though not necessarily for its musical chops, more for its role as a historical document. Numerous unreleased early tracks, such as ’Beep Beep’ and the 12" JJ Jeczalik remould of ’Time To Fear’, prove to be rather more rewarding than later demo-bites. ’Cassandra’ encompasses pretty much every aspect of Art of Noise circa-’Invisible Silence’ - a triumph of sorts.

Despite a few own goals (the irksome ’Metaforce’ with Rakim rapping on it is just wrong), this is an expansive and conclusive round-up of long-discraded jigsaw pieces that, for the most part, deserve to be slotted together.
